Funeral of George VI

1952 February 15

Dad was selected to be part of the King George funeral parade on February 15th 1952. He was at Paddington station when the coffin and the royal family boarded the train for Windsor. He was in the front row but looking at the back of the men's heads its not possible to identify him. I remember him saying he was so close to the queen he could have reached out and tapped her on the shoulder.

Dad's grandmother found a photo in the newspaper which showed Dad standing in line with the other RAF men. She proudly showed it to everyone saying her grandson was at the funeral of the King. Its not known which paper or which date.

Dad recalled much marching and standing in line. It was a long day and all they were given to eat was a sweet!
